UK 1988 Royal Shield Silver Proof £1
In 1988, The Royal Mint issued a £1 in Sterling Silver. A new design was released representing the United Kingdom as a whole.
Created by the Deputy Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint, Derek Gorringe, it displays the Royal Shield of The Queen, with the St Edward Crown on top. The Royal Shield is part of the Royal Coat of Arms which is used for the monarch's official flag, as well as by courts and governments around the Commonwealth. It features a quartered shield depicting, in two quarters, the three lions of England, in one quarter, the rampant lion of Scotland, and in the final quarter, the harp of Ireland.
