William III Silver Crown
Known as William of Orange, William III ruled England jointly with his wife Mary from 1689 until her death in 1694, carrying on alone until his own passing in 1702. Groomed to lead the powerful Dutch Orange Order, fear of a Catholic succession in Protestant England would see him add this foreign throne to his natural birthright.
In 1688, William's invasion landed in Devon. Avoiding combat, the English monarch, James II, was apprehended and subsequently exiled to France.
In the following year, William and Mary ascended to the English throne during the 'Glorious Revolution'. However, James remained unwilling to surrender. Venturing into Ireland in 1689, aided by French troops courtesy of Louis XIV, and with intentions of employing the land as a launching point for an attack, James II encountered defeat at the hands of William in the 1690 Battle of the Boyne.
