How an argument created the first ever “Shield” Sovereign
• A genuine Gold British Sovereign struck between 1825 and 1830
• The first ever “Shield” Sovereign
• Struck from 22 Carat Gold to the same specification as today’s Sovereigns
• Highly sought after on the secondary market
• Limited numbers available on a first-come, first-served basis
Why I recommend the George IV 'Bare Head' Gold Sovereign…
This is the second Sovereign struck during George IV’s reign and is known as the “Bare” Head for the King’s portrait on the obverse, but it’s the reverse that makes it a Classic.
Following an argument between the King and the designer, Benedetto Pistrucci’s portrayal of St George slaying the dragon, which had dominated the Sovereign since 1817, was dropped and the first ever ‘Shield’ design was born. It would go on to dominate the Sovereign for the next 40 years.
Sovereign “firsts” are incredibly collectable and this George IV Sovereign is a true piece of history.
